Potential Badboy – Big Man Tings EP
Potential Badboy is having something of a career second wind within the Playaz camp. In fact, he never went away – and with dalliances into Garage and remixes for the likes of Nelly and Mary J Blige under his belt he’s hardly been resting on his laurels – but for those who know his jungle sound from twenty years back, this resurrection is far from potentially bad!
Famously withdrawing from DJing for five years, proclaiming there were ‘too many DJs out there’ and focusing on production, PBB now also makes a welcome return to the decks joining Hype and Pascal’s line up for the infamous Playaz nights at Fabric. He told Fried My Little Brain recently: ‘, I like that club: I can test my tunes there. The vibes come from nights like that, and I incorporate that with what I do. That sort of thing has led to what I’m creating at the moment…’
Influenced by reggae, rare groove, street poetry and TV commercials the PBB sound is eclectic but unmistakable. Tracks like ‘Lock Em Off’ and ‘Surrender’ have long since secured his place in the DnB hall of fame but there’s no stopping him. You’ll often find this guy working on five tunes at once and he claims he’s constantly inspired by the ravers.
‘Can’t Stop’ from the EP was recently Friction’s Fire track and has been picked up by Hype Machine also. With vocals from MC Junior Dangerous, bloggers and forums have commented on this EP having more of a street vibe and slower tempo than previous releases.
PBB told Fried Music News: ‘, this was a project and I had a new set of sounds to work with: it was created on a vibes tip…’
